The purpose of reaching out to extremists is to keep them talking so that everyone can see (1) how extreme they are and (2) how reasonable you are. Then you can achieve your goal, because the people will adopt your goal as their own.

Watch Out for Extremist Leaders
We respect soldiers, whether or not we agree with the reasons for the wars in which they fight. Today, Confederate Memorial Day, we pause to offer respect to the Confederate soldiers from South Carolina. Many died during the US Civil War; many others surrendered to end the war. We are grateful and thankful that the war ended on May 10, 1865.
